A Sponsor's Story
I actually saw hope in the eyes of parents and children compared to the abject despair I saw in the people living out on the streets
Kathy Junk, a long time supporter of Haitian Roots, described her experience of traveling to Haiti, meeting the children she sponsors, as well as meeting 20 families who were just entering the program.
She wrote, "They all had to travel some distance by tap-tap to bring the children to the hotel for their photos and to complete the contracts with Haitian Roots. Each child received a school bag and a soccer ball or doll. You cannot even imagine the look on their faces as they peeked inside their school bag to see colored pencils, clean white notepaper and other school supplies. Each child clutched their school bag to them closely and solemnly nodded as the translator told them these were for school and to take care of them. I just cannot tell you enough about what an amazing experience this was. I actually saw hope in the eyes of parents and children compared to the abject despair I saw in the people living out on the streets."
Education is the greatest tool that we have to break the poverty cycle. Children who go to school and learn are healthier, better-nourished, and live longer and more prosperous lives than those who are excluded. When children attend school they become aware of their own potential in the world, and are equipped with the life skills necessary to make informed choices and live well in society.
Haitian Roots offers supporters the opportunity to sponsor the child of their choice through a scholarship of $300/year. Sponsors and children enjoy building a relationship through photos and letters. Some of our sponsors have even had the opportunity to join us on volunteer trips and have met "their" children.
