Our Children

Children accepted into our education sponsorship program understand the benefits that an education can provide but, due to the tough economic circumstances in Haiti, are unable to afford the minimum costs of tuition and fees required to attend public school. After submitting an application, they are evaluated by one of our in-country coordinators and must be approved by a member of the Haitian Roots Board of Directors before they are accepted to our program. For $300/year (or $25/month) you help a child attend school -- an opportunity taken for granted by most of us. To the children (and their families) in our sponsorship program, receiving an education means hope for the future and an opportunity to break the cycle of poverty. You can change the life of one of these precious children by becoming a sponsor today!

If you give a man a fish he is hungry again in an hour. If you teach him to catch a fish you do him a good turn.

Stephie Fils-Aime

Bonjou. My name is Stephie. I was born on 17 Oct 2005. I live with my aunt who takes care of me. My favorite school subjects are geography and creole. I would like to be a doctor when I grow up. I like to dance. My favorite color is red. I think that it would be neat to visit Chile someday because I know of other Haitians who have moved there. My teachers describe me as very patient and reserved.

Velanda Etienne

Bonjou! I'm Velanda. I turned 4 this year (born 2012). I want to be a teacher when I grow up. When I am at home I am usually working. I like all foods. I love to dance. My favorite color is red. My teachers say that I am very very smart but they worry about me because I live with my aunt and we don't often have the basic clothing or things for me to come to school. But thanks to Haitian Roots, I at least have a chance.

Robenise Etienne

Alo! I'm Robenise. My birthday is 7 July 2005. I am a little behind in school because I haven't always been able to attend school. But I am catching up now. I am learning French, which I really like. I hope to become a nurse. I like to eat vegetables but I don't like ground corn. I love to dance and I love the color pink. I enjoy school and being able to learn with so many other children.

Saul Cenat

Hello. My name is Saul. My birthday is 13 Dec 2003. I live in Port au Prince with my mother and my sister. My favorite subject to study at the Haitian Roots Academy is French. I would like to become a police officer some day. When I'm not at school I like to play soccer and hang out with my friend Cliff. My teachers say I'm smart and that my weakness and my strength is that I talk a lot. Sometimes I have a hard time concentrating, but I'm still doing well in school and hope to be able to continue to study.

Jephte Clement

Hello, my name is Jephte Clement. I was born in 20 September 2007. I am in kindergarten. I am a bit behind in my schooling because I haven’t always had the opportunity to go. I love being able to come to the Haitian Root Academy. I am friendly but also quiet and gentle. When I bring lunch to school I always share with the other kids who don’t have any. My dream is to become a police officer one day!

Fransly Pierre

Hi! I’m Frans1y! I was born on Christmas Day in 2008! In school I like studying social science and Creole. I would like to be an engineer when I grow up. When I’m not at school I like to swim, play soccer, and learn how to cook. My favorite food is fish! My teacher says that I’m very good at participating in class and answering questions…but I’m not so good at doing any schoolwork once I’m at home. I’m going to work on that!

Flora Philistin

Bonjou! I am Flora and my birthday is 28 March 2011. I am in the second year of kindergarten. In school I love it when we learn poems. I want to be a nurse someday. My best friend is Keisha. I hope to visit Miami one day to see if it is beautiful like people say. My best feature is my nose. I love to dance and I’m very confident in myself. My teachers say that I am very intelligent and driven and that nothing can stop me from accomplishing my dreams.

Luckenson Paul

Bonjou! My name is Luckenson. My birthday is 3 Nov 2009 and I’m in the 3rd year kindergarten class. I live with my mother and my sister. At school I really like singing and I also like when we learn poems. I want to be a writer someday. My favorite sport is basketball! My best friend is my mom. When I’m not at school I just sleep most of the time. I think someday I can go to Canada to continue my studies and become a great writer! My teacher describes me as humbler and “adorable”! The hardest thing for me is that my father is not in my life and my mother struggles a lot to provide for us.
